American author, business executive, radio host, syndicated columnist and Tea Party activist Herman Cain once said: “Success is not >the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” Matt Pieper certainly follows Cain’s adage and collects, simply because it makes him happy. Matt is passionate about anything that has to do with Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario Brothers. Whether it be stickers, figurines, dolls, or video games, (this list really is endless) if it’s blue with spiky hair or loves meatballs, it’s on Matt’s list.
Matt has been collecting for over 24 years. One item he enjoys collecting is Sonic the Hedgehog comic books. I hadn’t even realized they made comic books about Sonic the Hedgehog. I always thought comic books were based on super heroes. Now that I think of it, Sonic is always trying to save the world from Eggman’s plan of world domination. This would certainly qualify as heroic in my book. Matt buys his comics from local comic book shops. The oldest item Matt owns are Ninja Turtle figurines which he started collecting at the age of 4. Isn’t a movie being made about the Ninja Turtles? I guess the value of these figurines is about to sore! Throughout his life Matt has collected action figures from most any series he likes such as Star Wars, the Simpsons, Space Ghost, and Scooby Doo (just to name a few). But what appeals to Matt the most about Sonic and Mario is that unlike a movie that ends or a TV show that gets canceled, the hedgehog and plumber continue to live on as new video games are produced every year. And with each new game comes new action figures, comic books, etc.
Everyone has a pet peeve, even collectors. Matt’s pet peeve is having a hole in his collection. He likes having a complete set of whatever it is he’s collecting. This makes a lot of sense actually. How can you have a Mario figurine without a Luigi? So if you’ve got a rare Mario or Sonic item, you may want to give him a holler.
One of my regrets as a child, was always wanting to grow up too fast. Even when I did grow up, it was so important for me to be discreet about some of the childhood things I held on to. Well, this collector isn’t afraid to admit that he is still a kid at heart. This is the reason why he loves collecting. The item he cherishes the most is a Sonic the Hedgehog stuffed animal that he has owned for 19 years. He must have had some very loving parents to let him hang on to a toy for so long! Matt states that he never spends a night without him. This doll has been to ten different countries. The one collectible that Matt is currently in search of is a Blaze the Cat figure, one of Sonic’s supporting cast members. Matt has an entire room he dedicates to his collection, so we knows once he finds this figurine, the search for more valuable items is just beginning.
